DESCRIPTION
Modeled after JACOB & JOSEF KHON.
Chair. Viennese Secession, ca. 1890-1900.
Beech wood, steam bent.
Embossed leather seat and back.
Restored.
Measurements: 96 × 60 × 60 cm.
Chair-butcher representative of the Central European bentwood tradition of the late nineteenth century, made following the models developed by the firm Jacob & Josef Kohn, one of the main manufactures of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the field of bent furniture.
The structure is made of steam-bent wood, a technique that defined the Viennese production of the period and made it possible to develop continuously curved arms and a light but resistant silhouette. The circular seat maintains the constructive coherence of the whole.
The embossed and embossed leather back and seat are decorated with stylized vegetal motifs that anticipate modernist sensibilities.
The piece is situated in the context of transition between late historicism and the new decorative trends that would lead to the Viennese Secession, maintaining a balance between structural sobriety and restrained ornamental treatment.
