DESCRIPTION
FERNANDO CAMPANA (Brazil, 1961) AND HUMBERTO CAMPANA (Brazil, 1953-2022) for EDRA.
Vermelha" chair, design 1998.
Steel and silver plaited rope.
In good condition, with marks of use.
Measurements: 77 x 86 x 57 cm.
Iconic piece of contemporary design made with steel structure covered by silver plaited rope, applied manually in a complex weave that generates an organic and enveloping surface.
Its origin responds to a gesture as simple as it is poetic: the designers acquired a large bundle of rope in a street stall and, observing the chaotic form it took when stacked in their studio, they imagined a chair built from that spontaneous weave, a metaphor for the "beautiful chaos" that, according to the authors themselves, characterizes Brazil.
The piece is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The model was originally conceived in red rope -from which its name derives-, although the Italian firm Edra has subsequently produced it in different chromatic variants, among them the silver version.
Fernando and Humberto Campana are among the most influential designers in contemporary design. Since the 1980s they have developed their own language characterized by experimentation with simple materials and reinterpreted craft techniques. Their work combines design, art and Brazilian popular culture, and is part of the collections of international institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Vitra Design Museum. The "Vermelha" chair is one of his most famous creations and a benchmark of late 20th century design.
