DESCRIPTION
GIO PONTI (Milan, 1891 - 1979)
Folding chair model "Ninfea", ca. 1950
Dark stained bentwood (probably beech).
Recently reupholstered. In very good general condition.
Measurements: 70 x 48 x 78 cm.
Designed by Gio Ponti in the 1950s, the "Ninfea" folding chair is an elegant example of Ponti's ability to unite functionality and formal lightness. Its wooden structure, with its curved lines and slender profile, defines a fluid silhouette that lends dynamism and sophistication to the ensemble.
The folding mechanism underlines the practical vocation of the piece, conceived to adapt naturally to the domestic space.
Architect and designer, Gio Ponti was particularly noted for his work in the field of furniture and industrial design, where he promoted a modern aesthetic based on lightness, formal clarity and functionality.
He collaborated with firms such as Cassina, for which he designed the iconic Superleggera chair (1957). His production is characterized by refined lines, intelligent use of materials and a constant search for balance between form and use.
Founder of Domus magazine in 1928, Ponti also played an essential role in the dissemination of modern design, establishing himself as one of the great references of twentieth-century design.
