DESCRIPTION
Pair of chairs; Following THONET models, c. 1960.
Wood and upholstered seat.
Measurements: 45 x 45 x 47 cm (x2); 80 cm (seat height, x2).
Set of two chairs clearly inspired by Michael Thone's models. Both reveal in their design the persistence of a formal language that, more than a century after its invention, was still current, functional and aesthetically recognizable. They are pieces that combine a curved wooden structure with an upholstered seat, where constructive simplicity becomes an expressive value in itself.
At first glance, the visual lightness of the chairs is one of their most striking features. The continuous lines of the backrest, gently arched, dialogue with the lower structure, generating a balance between stability and dynamism. This quality is not accidental: it derives directly from the steam-bent wood technique developed by Thonet in the 19th century, which made it possible to bend the wood without breaking it, thus creating organic and resistant forms. In these mid-twentieth century chairs, this technique is reinterpreted with a more sober aesthetic, where the upholstery introduces a dimension of comfort and modernity.
The design responds to a logic of economy of means: few elements, assembled with precision, generate a solid structure. This principle refers to the so-called "Thonet principle", based on the reduction of components and the possibility of mass production, which revolutionized the furniture industry by making it more accessible and efficient. Thonet's influence is also evident in the typology: wrap-around backrest, slightly curved legs and lower circular reinforcements that provide stability without weighing down the structure. This type of structural solution became an international standard, especially in cafés, canteens and public spaces.
