BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of six chairs; COURO BRAZIL, c. 1980.
Leather.
Measurements: 43 x 43 x 43 cm (x6); 91 cm (back height, x6).
Couro Brazil's set of six chairs from the 1980s is an example of late modern design in Latin America, where minimalist aesthetics merge with the nobility of materials. These pieces stand out for their clean, geometric structure: straight back, clean lines and an almost architectural silhouette, in which the leather is not simply a covering, but the protagonist element. Each chair is completely covered in leather, including legs and frame, creating a monolithic and sophisticated appearance.
"Couro Brazil" (or "De Couro Brazil", as it appears in some vintage market references) is not so much an individual author's brand as a manufacturer associated with the rise of Brazilian design in the second half of the 20th century. Its pieces are situated within a moment in which Brazil consolidated its own identity in furniture design, influenced by European modernism but reinterpreted with local materials and a strong handcrafted touch.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Brazil positioned itself as a reference in the production of leather furniture thanks to the abundance of raw materials and the industrial development of the sector. The country is one of the world's largest leather producers, which made it possible to create high quality, resistant furniture with sophisticated finishes that reached international markets. In this context, companies such as Couro Brazil explored the potential of leather beyond traditional upholstery. Instead of using it only as a covering, they integrated it structurally into the design, aligning themselves with international trends such as Mario Bellini's CAB chair, but with their own Latin American identity.
