Estudio Técnico Darro; Darro, Madrid, 1960.
Floor lamp.
Metal and linen.
Measurements: 165 x 45 cm (diameter of shade).
This piece synthesizes with great clarity the principles of Spanish modern design of the mid-twentieth century: sobriety, functionality and structural elegance. Its composition is articulated from a very stylized metal shaft, which rises with an almost architectural lightness from a base of three open supports. This solution not only guarantees stability, but also introduces a subtle formal dynamism. The cylindrical linen screen, of balanced proportions, softens the rigid geometry of the metal support, generating a contrast between the industrial and the domestic.
Estudio Técnico Darro was part of the Darro firm, founded in Madrid in 1959 by Paco Muñoz, at a key moment for the renewal of design in Spain. In the context of cultural openness after the post-war period, Darro emerged with the intention of modernizing domestic furniture and bringing it closer to the most advanced European trends, especially the influences of Nordic design and German rationalism. More than a simple workshop or commercial brand, Estudio Técnico Darro functioned as an interdisciplinary creative team, where the pieces were not attributed to a single author, but were developed collectively under the same philosophy.
Darro not only produced furniture and lighting, but also played a fundamental role as a cultural disseminator. Its store in Madrid acted as a hybrid space between gallery, showroom and meeting point for architects, artists and designers, helping to introduce new ways of understanding interior design and modern living in Spain. Leading figures in architecture and design collaborated in this environment, reinforcing the innovative character of the firm. During the 1960s and 1970s, Darro consolidated its position as one of the main references of modern Spanish design.
