DESCRIPTION
JOSEF HOFFMANN (Austria, 1870-1956), for Wittmann
Pair of armchairs model "Cabinet".
Original design ca.1903.
Ash and velvet.
In good vintage condition, with signs of use commensurate with age.
Pair of armchairs with rigorous lines and refined architecture, characteristic of Josef Hoffmann's language. The cubic structure in ash wood defines a clear and balanced volume, where geometry becomes an essential element of the design.
The velvet upholstery adds depth and comfort, softening the strict orthogonality of the whole. These pieces reflect the principles of the Wiener Werkstätte, where Hoffmann sought a synthesis of functionality, elegance and formal purity.
A key architect and designer of Viennese modernity, Hoffmann was a disciple of Otto Wagner and a founding member of the Viennese Secession. Co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, he developed a geometric language that had a decisive influence on 20th century design. His work is present in museums such as the MAK and the Leopold Museum in Vienna, as well as the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
