BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of Murano sconces. BAROVIER & TOSO. Venice, Italy.
Blown and molded glass, with fine gold inclusions.
Brass internal structure.
In very good state of preservation. Slight losses in the metal.
Measurements: 82 × 55 × 14 cm (each).

Sumptuous pair of Murano glass sconces made by the prestigious firm Barovier & Toso, conceived in a language that evokes the models of the thirties and the aesthetics of Deco reinterpreted from the Venetian tradition. The composition is articulated vertically by means of an elegant display of curved leaves and floral elements that generate an ascending rhythm of great dynamism.

The glass, worked with fine gold inclusions, provides a warm and enveloping luminosity. The treatment of the surfaces with grainy textures close to the rouged technique stands out, giving the pieces a delicate, almost textile appearance, evoking lace or suspended organic forms.

The lampshades, with their undulating profile, diffuse the light, producing golden reflections and transparencies that intensify their scenographic character. The set evidences the high technical virtuosity characteristic of the Murano workshops and, in particular, of Barovier & Toso, a firm that knew how to combine traditional craftsmanship and formal innovation throughout the twentieth century.

Founded in 1942 after the union of two historic glassmaking families, Barovier & Toso has its roots in the Murano tradition documented since the thirteenth century. Under the direction of Ercole Barovier, the firm played a key role in the renewal of artistic glass, developing new techniques and its own language that combined the sculptural weight of the material with the delicacy of artisanal blowing. Its production, especially in the field of lighting, became an international reference for its technical quality and its ability to reinterpret classic Venetian models in a modern key.
