DESCRIPTION
GERARD VAN DEN BERG (Holland, 1947) for Montis. The Netherlands.
Lounge chair "The Rock", 1970s.
Upholstered in mustard-colored Kvadrat velvet.
In good condition.
Measurements: 112 x 93 x 98 cm; 36 cm (seat height).
Lounge chair model "The Rock", designed by Gerard van den Berg for Montis in the 1970s. Considered one of the firm's most iconic and sought-after models, it stands out for its powerful sculptural presence and a seating concept fully linked to Dutch design of the 1970s.
Its continuous, low, enveloping volume generates a rounded, almost architectural silhouette, softened by the curvature of the backrest and the depth of the seat. The mustard-colored Kvadrat velvet upholstery reinforces its warm, contemporary character, creating an attractive contrast between the formal forcefulness of the piece and the tactile richness of the fabric.
Trained in furniture construction and design at a technical school, Gerard van den Berg founded the upholstered furniture company Montis in the 1970s with his brother, which soon achieved international recognition. In the early 1990s he left the firm and continued to develop an outstanding independent career, collaborating with major international companies and receiving numerous awards and distinctions.
