BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

HENRI RAPIN (Paris, 1873-1939).
Showcase, ca. 1925.
In carved mahogany wood with bas-reliefs, glass and brass mounts.
In good structural condition. Exhibits sligthly wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 167 x 80 x 30 cm.

Exceptional showcase made by Henri Rapin around 1925, at the height of French Art Deco. The piece stands out for its slender and proportioned structure, with two glass doors framed by brass frames and metal handles of stylized profile, decorated with incised motifs. The combination of hardwood, glass and brass responds to a refined conception of furniture, where functionality, constructive precision and ornamental elegance are integrated with great balance.

The greatest decorative interest is concentrated on the sides, richly carved with a geometric repertoire of oriental inspiration, with echoes of the neo-Islamic language reinterpreted from the formal purification of Art Deco. Vertical rhythms, triangular motifs, grids and symmetrical compositions add depth and character to the whole, turning the display case not only into a piece of display furniture, but also into a piece of fine cabinetmaking conceived from the union between art, design and function.

Henri Rapin was a painter, illustrator, decorator and designer, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Specializing in furniture and decorative arts, he worked with fine woods, marquetry, inlays and collaborations with sculptors and ceramists. A central figure in French Art Deco, he was responsible for the planning and design of the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, as well as artistic director of the school of the Comité de Dames de la Union centrale des arts décoratifs and the Sèvres porcelain factory.
