DESCRIPTION
Brutalist coat rack, 1960s.
Iron and brass.
Measurements: 187 x 60 x 60 x 60 cm.
The structural sincerity, the formal reduction and the absence of ornamentation lead this coat rack to be qualified as brutalist. The piece is built from basic and easily identifiable geometric elements (a vertical axis, two circular rings and a cruciform base) whose function is completely exposed. Its austere, almost industrial appearance, the sensation of solidity and the rhythmic repetition of the metal hooks reinforce this direct and functional aesthetic. In addition, the marked verticality, the forceful proportions and the contrast between the circular and linear elements give it a sculptural presence that transcends its practical utility, a frequent feature of mid-20th century Brutalist design.
