DESCRIPTION
AKSEL BENDER MADSEN (Ringe, Denmark, 1916-2000) for Bovenkamp.
Sofa, 1950s-60s.
Wooden structure, with exposed armrests and light blue upholstery.
Measurements: 86 x 163 x 70 cm.
Elegant sofa designed by Aksel Bender Madsen for the Dutch firm Bovenkamp, a representative piece of Scandinavian mid century refinement. The exposed wood structure, with flowing lines and gently curved arms, frames a very sober upholstery, creating a particularly attractive balance between material warmth, visual lightness and comfort.
Bovenkamp, a Dutch manufacturer renowned for its collaborations with Scandinavian designers, produced high-quality pieces in the middle decades of the 20th century, combining constructive solidity and refined aesthetics.
Aksel Bender Madsen was a leading figure in Danish modern design. Trained as a cabinetmaker and furniture architect, he collaborated closely with Ejner Larsen and developed a body of work marked by precision craftsmanship, noble use of wood and timeless functional elegance. His designs are part of international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk.
