DESCRIPTION
Pair of chairs "Grotto", Venice, Italy, 1950s.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 93 x 38 x 40 cm (x2).
Pair of "Grotto" chairs made of carved wood in Venice during the 1950s. These pieces stand out for their organic and sculptural design, inspired by the forms of nature and the Venetian decorative tradition linked to the marine world.
The "grotto" style has its origins in the grottoes or artificial grottoes created as ornamental pavilions by the European nobility between the 18th and 19th centuries. From this fascination with the natural and the fantastic later emerged a decorative language applied to furniture, especially popular in Venice in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with pieces that reinterpret shells, dolphins and marine motifs in a handcrafted key.
