DESCRIPTION
PIERRE PAULIN (Paris 1927 - 2009) for Artifort.
Pair of armchairs Mushroom". 1st edition, c. 1960.
Upholstered in blue chenille by Pierre Frey.
Reupholstered pieces.
Measurements: 58 x90 x 90 cm (x2).
This pair of first editions stands out for its unmistakable enveloping silhouette, conceived as a continuous, soft form that seems to emerge from the floor, inviting the body to sink. Its design, with a strong sculptural charge, is characterized by the absence of edges and the fluidity of its volumes, abstractly evoking the shape of a mushroom, hence its name. Reupholstered in Pierre Frey's light blue chenille, the pieces acquire a tactile texture and a serene chromatic presence that reinforces their enveloping and sophisticated character.
Pierre Paulin is considered one of the fundamental figures of post-war French design and a key reference in international modern furniture. His career began in the 1950s with his collaboration with Thonet, where he came into contact with innovation in industrial materials, following in the footsteps of designers such as Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. However, it was his union with the firm Artifort in 1956 that marked a decisive turning point in his career, allowing him to develop his most personal language. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Paulin avoided formal rhetoric and titled his designs with numerical codes, reflecting his desire to purify the object of any unnecessary narrative burden. His work is distinguished by his research into ergonomics, the softness of forms and the integration of the human body as a central element of design.
Throughout his career, he collaborated in projects of great institutional relevance, such as the renovation of spaces in the Elysée Palace and the Louvre Museum through Mobilier National, as well as the design of presidential interiors during the 1970s and 1980s. In parallel, his most iconic pieces, such as the Mushroom, the Ribbon Chair or the Tongue series, consolidated his international recognition.
Today, Pierre Paulin's work is part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The Mushroom armchairs remain one of his most celebrated creations: a manifesto of modern comfort where organic form, technical innovation and aesthetic sensibility merge into a single timeless piece.
