BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

UGO LA PIETRA (Italy, 1938).
Sideboard "Breccia", c. 1980.
Maple wood, glass and metal handles.
Measurements: 165 x 180 x 50.
Conceived as a sculptural piece of two bodies, the Breccia sideboard transcends its utilitarian function to become a visual reflection on the relationship between architecture, landscape and domestic object. Made of maple wood, glass and metal handles, Breccia stands out for its unique silhouette. On a rigorous geometric base, irregular profiles emerge that evoke mountain formations or geological features, while the organic openings of the upper compartments introduce a sense of dynamism and lightness.
This fusion between rational structure and landscape evocation is a constant in the work of Ugo La Pietra, one of the most relevant figures of Italian radical design. Architect, artist, filmmaker, designer and theorist, La Pietra has dedicated his extensive career to investigating the relationship between the individual and his environment, questioning the traditional boundaries between public and private space. His multidisciplinary production ranges from architecture and industrial design to painting, experimental film, music and teaching, always from a critical and innovative point of view.
Linked to the Radical Design movement that emerged in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s, La Pietra defended a vision of design as a tool for cultural and social transformation. His furniture, far from responding solely to functional criteria, was conceived as a vehicle for reflection capable of generating new forms of interaction with everyday space. Its sculptural presence, the quality of its materials and the originality of its conception make it an exceptional piece of contemporary Italian design.
