The Snowball lamp, designed by Poul Henningsen in 1924, is a masterpiece of precision and balance. Its structure is based on a careful mathematical study of shapes and proportions, where each surface is calculated to receive light at an exact angle. The result is a uniform, efficient and glare-free illumination that transforms light into a harmonious visual experience.
Designer, architect, inventor and cultural critic, Poul Henningsen was one of the most influential figures of interwar Denmark. Although he studied architecture between 1911 and 1917, he never graduated, preferring to pursue a career marked by experimentation and creativity. Even so, he practiced as an architect and became one of the great advocates of functionalism, convinced that design should improve everyday life.
His quest for perfect lighting led to some of the most iconic lamps of the 20th century. Among them is the celebrated PH Artichoke, a revolutionary piece that uses overlapping layers to control light, eliminate glare and create an atmosphere of extraordinary beauty. The success of his designs allowed him to continue researching new lighting solutions and consolidated his legacy as one of the great innovators of modern design.
Today, Poul Henningsen's work is part of the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Danish Museum of Art and Design, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among many other internationally renowned museums.
