This table lamp by Tommaso Barbi is an excellent example of 1970s Italian design, characterized by the reinterpretation of organic and natural forms. Crafted from white glazed ceramic, its shade is shaped like a palm tree.
Tommaso Barbi was an Italian designer and artist renowned for his contributions to furniture, lighting, and interior design during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Born in Florence, he studied art and design in Florence, Rome, and Milan, developing a distinctive style that combined the elegance of Italian design with a strong inspiration drawn from nature. His work is distinguished by the use of fine materials such as brass, bronze, glass, marble, and ceramics, crafted with a high level of artisanal skill. Barbi created pieces of great sculptural richness in which organic forms predominate—especially leaves, palm trees, corals, and plant motifs—transformed into lamps, tables, mirrors, and highly sophisticated decorative objects. Throughout his career, he collaborated with leading architects and interior designers, including Renzo Mongiardino and Peter Marino, in addition to carrying out projects for private clients and luxury brands in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Today, her creations are highly valued in the collectible design market and are considered benchmarks of 20th-century Italian design due to their ability to blend functionality, craftsmanship, and artistic expression.
