BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MICHAEL YOUNG (Sunderland, United Kingdom, 1966) for E&Y Co. Ltd.
“Easy Magazine” Chair, 1994,
Aluminum frame and black leather upholstery.
In good condition.
Measurements: 65 x 86 x 65 cm.
Chair with aluminum frame and black leather upholstery. Introduced in 1994, the Magazine model epitomizes Michael Young’s ability to transform a functional gesture into an aesthetic one. Designed for E&Y Co. Ltd., the chair features a spacious recess beneath the seat intended for storing magazines, integrating function and form into a single solution. Its silhouette, with elliptical lines and rounded forms, evokes the organic design of the 1960s and 1970s, while the central void takes on as much visual prominence as the furniture’s volume itself. The piece won the Best UK Design Award in 1996 and became one of the designer’s most iconic creations, cementing his international reputation and remaining an icon of British design from the 1990s.
Michael Young is one of the most influential British industrial designers of his generation. After earning a degree in Industrial Design from Kingston University in 1992, he founded his studio the following year and soon gained international recognition for his experimental approach to furniture and objects, characterized by the exploration of new materials, industrial processes, and sculptural forms. Throughout his career, he has developed projects in Europe and Asia, collaborating with firms such as E&Y, Cappellini, KEF, and Brionvega. His works are part of the permanent collections of institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the SFMOMA in San Francisco, and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
