BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ROLF KRÜGER (Hamburg, Germany, 1939) for Staff.
Pair of “Bubble” lamps, c. 1970.
Smoked glass, metal, and ceramic.
In working condition.
Measurements: 22 cm (diameter, x2).
The “Bubble” lamp design is an iconic piece within Rolf Krüger’s body of work. Created in the 1970s, this lamp stands out for the textured finish of the glass used in the globular shade, and its aesthetic reflects a taste for the space-age style so characteristic of Krüger’s work.
Rolf Krüger, winner of the iF Design Award in 1968, was undoubtedly one of Staff’s most important designers, with whom he created many of his designs. He was known for his elegant and award-winning Space Age lighting. He studied fine and applied arts at the Heinrich Zernack School in Berlin before attending the Meisterschule für das Kunsthandwerk (now the Berlin University of the Arts) from 1960 to 1964. For Staff, he also designed the iconic Cross Oyster recessed ceiling lamp, which was exhibited at the Mercedes-Benz booth at the 1970 Geneva International Motor Show. Between the 1960s and 1970s, he also collaborated with the lighting manufacturer Heinz Neuhaus Leuchten. Throughout his career as a designer, Krüger has received more than 30 awards, including several iF Design Awards. His lighting pieces are part of the collections of the Landesmuseen Schleswig-Holstein, the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, the Design Museum in Munich, and the Kunstgewerbemuseum of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
