BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ERNST MOECKL (Germany, 1931–2013) for Horn.
Dining table and four chairs.
Lacquered wood table and polyurethane chairs.
Comes with label.
Measurements: 76 x 44 x 44 cm (chairs, x4); 73 x 124 cm (table).
This set, consisting of a round table with a central leg and four Kangaroo or Z-Chairs, is a magnificent example of German Space Age design. The chairs, designed by Ernst Moeckl in 1968, are striking for their characteristic “Z” silhouette, which merges the seat, backrest, and base into a single, continuous, almost sculptural form. The use of Baydur, a polyurethane developed by Bayer, allowed for experimentation with organic yet sturdy forms that were extraordinarily advanced for their time. The design also has an interesting historical dimension: originally developed in East Germany, the model was seen as a German response to the new one-piece plastic chairs that were transforming the international furniture scene. Later, Horn Collection produced versions in West Germany, cementing its association with the Space Age aesthetic and experimentation with new materials. The table, with its circular top and central pedestal, completes the set with an equally refined and futuristic design language.
Ernst Moeckl was a German designer particularly known for his experimentation with plastics and the futuristic aesthetic of the 1960s. His Kangaroo Chair became his most recognizable creation, thanks to an unusual combination of technical innovation, ergonomics, and a sculptural form that, more than half a century later, retains its futuristic appearance.
