DESCRIPTION
Pair of chairs; Spain, ca. 1960.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 99 x 33 x 34 cm (x2).
With a distinct sculptural character, this unique pair of Spanish chairs from around 1960 is an interesting example of the most expressive and primitive aspect of mid-20th-century design. Crafted entirely from carved wood, they stand out for the boldness of their forms, their deliberately austere construction, and ornamentation reduced to elements with strong symbolic meaning.
Their formal language can be linked to Brutalism, understood not so much as a strictly architectural application of the movement, but rather as a sensitivity toward material, construction, and the expressiveness of the object. At the same time, the presence of the rosette and the small openwork opening in the backrest introduces a folk element, evoking the tradition of Spanish craftsmanship and moving away from the strict rationality of industrial furniture.
