This desk is part of a line of office furniture in which George Ciancimino combined industrial precision with a particularly refined structural design. The spacious work surface appears visually detached from the suspended drawer units, leaving the central area open and lightening the appearance of this substantial piece of furniture. The attribution and chronology are also consistent with other documented desks by the designer for the French firm during this period.

Particularly distinctive are the four-lobed uprights, resembling a four-leaf clover—a design element that Ciancimino employed in various tables and pieces created for Mobilier International and which became one of the recognizable features of these designs. The precision of the stretcher frame contrasts with the intense grain of the surfaces, while the storage units are subordinated to the desk’s overall architecture, preserving the clean lines of the design.

George Ciancimino began his career in Paris as a ceramist and sculpture assistant before turning to furniture design during his time in North America and later in London. In the late 1960s, he returned fully to design, developing a style that combined his interest in Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary industrial processes. His designs were produced under license by firms such as Mobilier International, Jens Risom, Martinez Medina, and Steelcase, and he was invited to develop products for MoMA in New York. In 1985, he was named a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers.
