BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

NIALL O’FLYNN (Ireland, 1959) for Spectrum (Bergeijk, Netherlands).
Pair of “Rascal” chairs, designed in 1997.
Galvanized steel tubular frame, with seat and backrest woven using metal springs.
In good original condition, with a patina consistent with its age and use.
Measurements per chair: 73 x 50 x 60 cm.

Designed in 1997 and produced only for a brief period, until 2001, the “Rascal” is one of Niall O’Flynn’s most distinctive designs for Spectrum. The piece uses materials of unmistakably industrial origin to create an extraordinarily lightweight structure: the continuous network of metal springs forms the seat and backrest, allowing light to pass through and reducing the volume to a virtually transparent surface.

The simplicity of the tubular structure is a hallmark of its contrast with the visual and tactile complexity of the mesh, whose gentle curves shape the seat and lend flexibility to the whole. O’Flynn thus transforms a technical material into the true star of the design, combining constructive economy, ergonomics, and a marked industrial expressiveness. The fact that the two chairs are preserved together also allows one to appreciate the material coherence and the patina acquired by the steel through use.

A multidisciplinary architect and designer, Niall O’Flynn trained in Dublin and at Parnham College in Dorset. His professional work has spanned industrial design, furniture, and interior design, with a particular focus on the properties and constructive possibilities of materials. The “Rascal,” developed for the Dutch firm Spectrum, is one of his most recognizable designs; in 2005, O’Flynn also won third prize in the Manacor Furniture Design Competition with the “Marx Brothers” project.
