An exceptional pair of large wall sconces designed by Jordi Vilanova around 1960, formerly owned by a Barcelona household. This is a striking model that is very rare on the market, conceived based on the formal language of the Anella collection, one of the most recognizable lines in the Catalan designer’s body of work.The structure is made of iron, arranged in the shape of a cross, and supports a white methacrylate diffuser that softens and filters the light from the two interior bulbs. Particularly noteworthy is the piece’s construction, in which Vilanova pays attention to both functionality and detail: the hardware was specifically designed by the designer himself, integrating seamlessly into the whole and forming part of its aesthetic conception. The result is a light fixture with a distinctly architectural character, in which the essential geometry of the structure is marked by its lightness and luminosity compared to the acrylic. Its scale—uncommon in this type of design—allows these wall sconces to be understood not only as lighting elements but as authentic design pieces intended to define the interior space.
Founder and publisher of the magazine *Questions d’Art* (1967–1974), Vilanova produced an extensive body of work in furniture and interior design and played an active role in the innovative Catalan design scene of the 1960s and 1970s. Among his best-known designs are the Tiracord and Billar chairs, the Montseny MP bunk bed, the Tartera and Petit rocking chairs, and the Z magazine rack, created in collaboration with his son Pau Vilanova Vila-Abadal. His work gained international recognition and was featured in exhibitions in the Scandinavian countries.
