This desk is a particularly refined example of 1950s Italian office furniture, combining a striking sculptural presence with a visually light construction. The body features concave profiles on both the front and back, creating a sinuous silhouette that has hallmarks of contrast with the wide glass top, raised above the structure and with a gently contoured edge.

The four drawers are arranged symmetrically on the sides, leaving the central area open, while the slender, outward-flaring legs culminate in brass feet. Particular care has been taken with the back, which is designed to be visible and adorned with a medical emblem inspired by the rod of Asclepius. This attention to every aspect of the piece reinforces its representative character and allows it to be understood as a desk intended to occupy a freestanding position within the space.

The design brings together several of Dassi’s signature features: the combination of select woods, glass, and small metallic accents, along with a penchant for curved profiles and solutions of remarkable artisanal quality. His mid-century work is distinguished precisely by the use of fine woods and a progressive refinement of form, always maintaining a balance between elegance and functionality.

Vittorio Dassi was a leading figure in mid-20th-century Italian furniture design and was associated with the firm Dassi Mobili Moderni in Lissone. During the 1950s, he collaborated with prominent Italian architects and designers, including Gio Ponti. One of the company’s most significant projects was the production of numerous pieces of furniture designed by Ponti for the Hotel Royal in Naples, which opened in 1955; this collaboration coincided with a further refinement and modernization of Dassi’s design language.
