BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Based on designs by Eero Saarinen (Kirkkonummi, Finland, 1910 – Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1961).
Side table inspired by the “Tulip Table” for Knoll, second half of the 20th century.
Flared central leg lacquered in white and a circular tabletop made of white marble with intense gray and black veining.
It shows signs of wear consistent with its age.
Measurements: 51 x 51 x 51 cm.

Side table inspired by the famous pedestal tables designed by Eero Saarinen for Knoll in 1957, one of the great icons of postwar modern design. The piece reproduces the collection’s characteristic design: a single central leg with a fluid, flared profile that replaces the traditional four-legged structure, topped here by a circular marble tabletop with pronounced veining, whose pattern adds a striking decorative element.

The Pedestal Collection was born out of Saarinen’s desire to eliminate the visual clutter created by the multiple legs beneath tables and chairs. To achieve this, he developed a single, sculptural base, seeking greater clarity in both form and space. The result was a family of tables and chairs whose continuous, organic silhouette quickly became one of the most recognizable images in 20th-century design and continues to be produced by Knoll.

Eero Saarinen was one of the leading figures in mid-20th-century American architecture and design. The son of architect Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen, he initially trained in sculpture in Paris and later in architecture at Yale, subsequently developing close ties with the Cranbrook Academy of Art. His training in sculpture is particularly evident in his designs for Knoll, in which he sought to solve functional problems through forms of great purity and visual continuity. The Pedestal Collection stands as one of the most accomplished expressions of this approach and an essential reference point in international modern furniture design.
