An interesting modular set produced by the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, representative of the renewal of Brazilian furniture design during the 1960s. Its design is based on a visually lightweight wooden structure, with slender legs and separate backrests and seats upholstered in an ecru tone. The ability to reconfigure the seating arrangement and combine the two modules with the side table reflects a modern and flexible conception of domestic space.
The piece stands out for its balance between structural precision, ergonomics, and the warmth of its materials—qualities closely associated with Brazilian modernism. Set against a deliberately light structure, the generous cushions introduce comfort and softness, while the built-in table allows for different configurations and transforms the set into a small architectural space for conversation and relaxation.

The Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de São Paulo, founded in 1873, played a fundamental role in the development of the applied arts and of Brazilian artisanal and industrial production. Initially conceived as an institution for technical and artistic training, it evolved into an important school-industry, with workshops specializing in woodworking, metalwork, and furniture making. During the 20th century, it participated in projects of enormous significance for Brazilian architecture; among them were works for the Municipal Theater of São Paulo and, in 1968, the construction of the steel structure for Lina Bo Bardi’s MASP.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the Liceu also became a renowned center for the production of modern furniture, collaborating with architects and designers and bringing the extraordinary craftsmanship of its workshops to its furniture. Its production from this period now holds a prominent place in collections of Brazilian modernism, particularly due to the combination of formal refinement, artisanal excellence, and the expressive use of wood.
