The “Table Bench,” designed by Finn Juhl in 1953, is one of the most interesting examples of his exploration of lightweight, multifunctional furniture. Conceived equally as a low table, bench, or display surface—with the option of adding a cushion—the piece combines a long teak tabletop with a slender tubular steel frame and wooden end caps, achieving a distinct sense of lightness despite its pronounced horizontal lines.
The design belongs to a particularly significant period in Juhl’s career. After achieving international recognition in the United States in the early 1950s, the designer incorporated metal structures inspired by modern American furniture into several of his creations, temporarily moving away from the all-wood constructions that had defined much of his earlier work. The Table Bench encapsulates this evolution through the contrast between the warmth of teak and the graphic precision of steel.

Finn Juhl was one of the key figures of Danish Modern and one of the main architects of its international prominence. Trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he approached furniture design with a sensibility akin to sculpture, seeking organic forms, visual lightness, and a particularly careful relationship with the human body. His success in the United States during the 1950s and projects such as the interior of the United Nations Trusteeship Council Chamber in New York cemented his international prestige. His distinctive way of visually separating the load-bearing elements from the supported ones became one of the most recognizable hallmarks of his design language.
