The “Ekstrem” is Terje Ekstrøm’s most iconic design and one of the hallmarks of Norwegian postmodern furniture. Initially conceived in 1972 and put into production in the early 1980s, it deliberately breaks with the conventional typology of the armchair: a continuous tubular frame, fully padded and upholstered, forms the seat, backrest, arms, and footrests as a single sculptural form. The model went into production in 1983 and was commercially launched in 1984.

Its unique geometry is not solely the result of a formal exploration. Ekstrøm designed the piece to accommodate different body positions, allowing one to sit facing forward, sideways, or to use its curved elements as alternative supports. This ergonomic freedom, combined with its striking visual presence and the comprehensive use of color, deliberately blurs the boundaries between functional furniture and a sculptural object.

Terje Ekstrøm was one of the most original figures in Norwegian design during the 1970s and 1980s. Trained first as a cabinetmaker and upholsterer and later in interior and furniture design in Oslo, he belonged to a new generation that challenged the austerity and established codes of postwar Scandinavian design, incorporating experimentation, Pop culture, and greater formal freedom. His contribution has been recognized by the Norwegian National Museum (Nasjonalmuseet), which in 2016 dedicated the exhibition *Ekstrem Ekstrøm. Norwegian Furniture and Industrial Design* to him, focusing precisely on his role during this period of transformation.
