An elegant French sideboard made around 1930, representative of the refinement achieved by Art Deco in European furniture of the interwar period. The design combines a distinctly horizontal structure with the hallmarks of different wood veneers, brass moldings, and meticulous figurative decoration featuring marine motifs.
The front features four doors framed by thin metal moldings. The side doors incorporate glass panels painted on the reverse with underwater scenes, while the central doors combine maple and burl wood and are highlighted by a unique circular brass medallion also decorated with fish. The same burl wood reappears as an inlay in the slightly raised central top, lending unity to the whole piece. The base, with its gently curved profile and a brass molding running along its edge, reinforces its elegant and architectural character.
The piece embodies some of the most characteristic features of French Art Deco: refined geometry, a wealth of materials, hallmarks of contrast, and restrained yet sophisticated ornamentation. The underwater iconography, uncommon in this type of furniture, also introduces a particularly unique decorative element that gives the sideboard a strong visual presence.
