An exceptional sideboard designed by Franco Albini during the 1930s, a pivotal period in the development of the Italian architect and designer’s modern style. Large in scale and marked by a pronounced horizontal orientation, the piece combines the material sophistication characteristic of interwar Italian furniture with an architectural and functional conception that foreshadows the principles of rationalism.

The sideboard stands out for its rigorously geometric composition, based on the hallmarks of contrast between the light maple fronts, the dark wood, and the chrome-plated metal details. Its most distinctive feature is the rotating central section, which conceals a fully equipped bar cabinet arranged on three levels—an ingenious solution that integrates function and design within the furniture’s own architecture. The open base and the pronounced horizontality of its 260 cm reinforce a modern, architectural conception, in which the refinement of the materials coexists with the formal purity characteristic of interwar Italian design.

Franco Albini was one of the leading figures of Italian Rationalism and one of the great pioneers of 20th-century architecture and design. Trained at the Polytechnic University of Milan, he began his professional career in the late 1920s and very soon became involved in the circles driving the renewal of Italian architecture. During the 1930s, he conducted extensive research into furniture, interiors, and exhibition spaces, grounded in structural rigor, constructive clarity, and a sophisticated balance between artisanal tradition and innovation. His ability to transform every functional element into part of a coherent architectural composition would remain a constant throughout his career, later finding expression in some of the most iconic projects and designs of Italian modernism.
