DESCRIPTION
Cup. Italy, ca. 1850.
Antico serpentine porphyry.
Restored bowl.
Measurements: 29 x 39 x 39 cm.
The particularity of the neoclassical cup in tender lies in the material used, the so-called ancient green porphyry (also serpentine or green porphyry of Greece), a variety of marble used by the Romans. Generally the porphyry background is dark green, but it can however vary in different shades of green and go as far as brown or violet. It contains spots (crystals) of green or white color, sometimes red or yellow, which have polygonal shape and dimensions ranging from millimeters to centimeters.
Formally the cup stands on a pedestal of straight profiles and sharp edges, on which rests the circular foot and the concave shaft. It has a large semiovoid vessel formed by concave and convex moldings.
