BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
French school of ca. 1700.
"Bishop".
Carved and gilded wood.
Presents a break in the staff.
Measurements: 114 x 38 x 35 cm.
Sculpture carved in round bulk representing a bishop wearing a mitre and carrying a crosier in his left hand. He raises his right hand in an attitude of blessing. The sumptuous attire of mantle and tunic has been carved and gilded with verist will, detailing with precise chiseled brocades and trimmings. The draperies reproduce with naturalism the folds of the ecclesiastical vestments, and the dense beard undulates softly strand by strand. The carving is from the French school. It belongs to the transition period between rococo and neoclassicism.
