DESCRIPTION
Pair of busts; France, c. 1880.
"Mercury and Mars."
Blued and gilded bronze. Belgian black marble and rouge groitte marble.
Measurements: 40 x 13 x 12 cm (x2).
These late 19th century French busts, made in dark bronze, represent Mercury and Mars, iconic figures of Roman mythology. Mercury is distinguished by his winged helmet symbolizing his role as messenger of the gods, while his expression conveys serenity and intelligence. Mars, on the other hand, wears an ornate helmet that evokes strength and authority, accompanied by a firm and determined expression, typical of his role as god of war. Both are mounted on classical columns, with a design that combines dark tones, golden details and square bases, achieving a visual contrast that highlights the sophistication of the pieces.
These sculptures, more than simple decorative objects, are a reflection of the interest in classicism and mythology during the 19th century, a period in which Europe sought to reaffirm its connection with classical antiquity. Such pieces not only demonstrated a high level of artistic skill, but also symbolized the prestige and good taste of those who owned them, becoming emblems of status and cultural erudition.
