BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
After PIERRE MIGNARD (Troyes, France, 1612-Paris, 1695), 18th century.
"Virgin, Child and St. Johnny".
Gilded bronze.
Presents fracture.
Measurements: 16.5 x 13 cm; 28.5 x 26 x 4.5 cm (frame).
Relief in gilded bronze of fine workmanship that reproduces the original work of Pierre Mignard (1612 - 1695) of the Virgin and Child with St. John, possibly based on the later intaglio print by François de Poilly (1623 - 1693).
Pierre Mignard developed his career primarily as a portraitist, although he also produced outstanding works on mythological and religious subjects. Shortly after his return to Paris, Mignard managed to attract the patronage of important personalities of the court and the intellectual sphere, which allowed him to receive numerous portrait commissions. He was one of the most successful portraitists of his time.
