In this female bust the French sculptor is interested in capturing the genuine expression of the model: natural features, without idealizing, and a frank and vivid smile. Émile Fernand-Dubois made sculptures in which the classical canon was made more flexible, seeking the concupiscence and veracity of the instant.
Fernand-Dubois was a French sculptor and medalist, framed within the art nouveau or modernism movement. His best known works were the monuments to the fallen in World War I and the bust of Marianne, widely reproduced. He won the gold medal at the 1923 Salon des Artistes Françaises. Notable works: Amoureuse extase (exhibited at the 1920 Salon des Artistes Français); Devant l'amour (ditto 1910); La femme au coquillage; bust of Marshal Foch (1914), Inassouvie (1890), statue of General Jean-Baptiste Eblé (1757-1812), in the Rohan Pavilion of the Rivoli wing of the Louvre.
