BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
JEAN MARIE DEGEORGE (1837-1888)
"La jeunesse d'Aristote".
Bronze.
Measurements: 31 x 20 x 18 cm.
In 1859 he won a prize for modeled figure. In 1866, he received the First Grand Prix de Rome for medal and stone engraving, with his medallion La France protégeant l'Algérie (France protecting Algeria), which made him a recognized medalist, thanks to the "sculptural breadth" given to his engraved works. He maintained during his life a strong link with his hometown, exhibiting regularly at the Lyon Salon between 1874 and 1882. He is buried in Paris in the Père-Lachaise Cemetery (92nd division).
His most famous work is The Youth of Aristotle (c. 1875). It depicts the philosopher as a young half-naked boy sitting in an armchair, reading a roll of parchment with a bored look on his face. The statue is currently in the Musée d'Orsay.
