BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JEAN GARNIER (Mouzeuil, 1853 - Paris, 1910).
Jug "Nymph with dolphin", ca. 1900.
Silver-plated pewter.
Signed on the lower side.
Marks on the lower front.
Weight: 860 g.
Bibliography: Philippe DAHHAN, Étains 1900, 200 Sculpteurs de la Belle Époque, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2000, reproduced p. 167, fig. 467.
Measurements: 21 x 8 x 11 cm.

This Art Nouveau silver-plated pewter jug with handle is notable for its sculptural design: the curved body simulates the form of a dolphin, whose tail forms the mouthpiece. A nymph rests on the back. The piece is signed.

The sculptor Jean Garnier, active during Art Nouveau, was recognized for his bronze sculptures and decorative vessels. He won an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1892. Garnier specialized in human figures with remarkable movement and realism, capturing everyday, rural and allegorical subjects. In addition to his figurative work, he produced busts and decorative vases that reflect the aesthetics of his time.
