DESCRIPTION
Gothic capital of Verona, northern Italy, 13th century.
Verona marble.
Measurements: 23 x 25 x 27 cm.
Gothic capital in Verona marble, carved with figures of birds and snakes. Although its original context has been lost, the characteristics of the piece, such as its continuous carving on the four faces, suggest that it may have crowned a free-standing column, possibly in a sacred space such as a crypt. Analysis of its material, iconography and possible function reveals a rich web of cultural and religious meanings, testimony to the artistic and architectural practices of the time in northern Italy.
The decoration of the capital, with birds and a serpent, is deeply rooted in medieval Christian iconography. In Christianity, the serpent is a symbol of evil, deception and temptation, in direct allusion to its role in the Garden of Eden. It represents the devil and demonic forces that threaten the believing soul. In contrast, birds often represent the soul, the spiritual and the divine. In many contexts, they symbolize the souls of the faithful who aspire to paradise or even Christ himself and his apostles. The juxtaposition of these figures in the capital evokes the perpetual struggle between good and evil, virtue and sin.
The material chosen, Verona marble, is not a minor detail. Known technically as a nodular limestone, often of a distinctive reddish hue ("Rosso di Verona"), this material has been appreciated and used in the region since Roman times. Its durability and warm color, sometimes veined with ammonite fossils, made it a favorite choice for both structural and decorative elements in northern Italian architecture and sculpture. The choice of this marble for the capital denotes a work of some importance and prestige.
