Van der Straten achieved great fame with this type of modernist busts. Born in Ghent, he began his career as a lawyer, although he decided to change his course and began his artistic training with the sculptor Jef Lambeaux. In 1883, he moved to Paris to begin his career and two years later, in 1885, he was presented for the first time at the Paris Salon, where he continued to exhibit until 1912. In 1900 he won for the first time the silver medal at the Universal Exposition and in 1903, he was decorated as a knight of the Legion of Honor.
