DESCRIPTION
Gothic capital with base; Spain, 14th century.
Carved stone.
Wear due to use and the passage of time.
Measurements: 30 x 25 x 25 cm (capital), 15 x 25 x 25 x 25 cm (base).
Gothic capital in carved stone in square form in the upper part and with the conical base, decorated in relief with geometric ornaments. It is curious how this specimen also maintains the base of the column, something uncommon in architectural elements of the period.
The Gothic capital is losing its importance as the style advances. After the transition period in which the Romanesque capital is followed, it appears as a somewhat conical drum embraced with foliage whose motifs are taken from the flora of the country and is crowned by a circular or polygonal abacus of various moldings.
Subsequently, the capital becomes smaller and more delicate and finally, it is eliminated when in the 15th century the bundle of reeds branches directly into the ribs of the vault without any solution of continuity in many cases or remains in the form of a simple ring.
