Art Nouveau pewter tabletop tray, an example of the creative freedom of the period, where the human figure and natural elements merge to elevate a functional object to the status of art sculpture. The relief decoration centers on a nude young figure, subtly veiled, holding a small figure in her hands. The scene is framed by detailed vegetal decorations and flowers.
Jacques Callot was a French sculptor who trained under such masters as Charles Gauthier, Gabriel Jules Thomas and François Hubert Ponscarme. From 1888, he exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Françaises. His source of inspiration centered on mythical themes, floral stylings and female figures.
