The work is an exceptional example of the creative freedom of the period, where the human figure and natural elements merge to elevate a functional object to the category of art sculpture. Its design features a rich relief decoration composed of vegetal ornaments and roses.
Antoine Nelson was a Belgian sculptor, son and pupil of Auguste Van Den Kerckhove. Nelson, active from 1880, settled in Paris from 1890 to 1910. Although he is known primarily for his Art Nouveau female busts, his work also includes decorative vases, sculptures and monuments.
