DESCRIPTION
Art Deco inkwell; France, c. 1930.
Bronze and marble base.
Measurements: 34 x 52 x 23 cm.
Art Deco inkwell, made in the early twentieth century, which presents an elegant and balanced design composed of three sculptures of storks or herons in bronze, arranged on a solid marble base. The figures, stylized and with geometric lines, reflect the characteristic taste of the period for formal simplification and harmony between noble materials, such as metal and stone.
This type of decorative objects were highly appreciated during the first half of the 20th century, especially among the wealthy classes and collectors who valued the union between functionality and art. In addition to its usefulness as a desk accessory, the inkwell fulfilled an aesthetic function, integrating itself into the refined decoration of offices, living rooms or libraries.
Storks or herons, frequent motifs in Art Deco decoration, evoke the grace, elegance and serenity of nature, adapted to the modern sensibility of the time. Taken together, this piece is a representative example of the sophistication and decorative balance that characterized the Art Deco style, fusing traditional craftsmanship with modern, ornamental design.
Pair of Louis XV style candelabra; Maison Millet, Paris, mid-19th century.
