"Franz Joseph I of Austria".
Patinated bronze.
Marble base.
Measurements: 22 x 13 x 13 cm.
This bust in patinated bronze represents Franz Joseph I of Austria (Franz Joseph I, 1830-1916), Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, one of the most emblematic political figures of 19th century Europe. The work was created in France at the end of the 19th century, in a context marked by the rise of historicist and commemorative sculpture.
The emperor is depicted half bust, with a severe and solemn expression. The prominent and drooping mustache stands out, an iconic feature of his physiognomy, treated with great sculptural precision. He wears a military uniform, decorated with orders and medals carefully modeled, which underline his imperial rank.
The modeling is naturalistic and meticulous, with special attention to the treatment of the face, the wrinkles of expression and the texture of the uniform. The dark patina, with subtle warm nuances, reinforces the solemn and official character of the piece.
