José Gozalbo was a Spanish sculptor active mainly during the second half of the twentieth century, whose career is part of the evolution of modern figurative sculpture in metal in Spain. His work was developed in an artistic context that was already fully posterior to the great historical avant-gardes, when modern languages had been assimilated and reinterpreted by a new generation of artists.
Gozalbo belongs to a group of sculptors who, without breaking radically with the figurative tradition, incorporated contemporary formal resources, especially the use of iron as the main sculptural material. In contrast to the conceptual or experimental hardness of the most radical abstract sculpture, his work is characterized by a desire for balance between modernity and legibility, always maintaining a clear reference to the human figure.
