The LOVE series represents the most iconic legacy of American pop artist Robert Indiana. Although the first monumental sculpture was cast in 1970 -currently preserved in the Indianapolis Museum of Art-, its iconic origin dates back to 1964, the result of a commission from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York for a Christmas card. The design is characterized by its serif typography where the letters L, O, V and E appear stacked, highlighting the characteristic slant of the letter "O". After its initial success, Indiana produced more than 50 editions of this work, making it a global symbol present in metropolises such as Philadelphia, Singapore and Taipei.
Robert Indiana was an American costume designer, painter, sculptor and stamp designer associated with the pop art movement. Indiana has also worked as a set and costume designer for theatrical works. His works employ symbols and words from everyday life painted in the vivid colors of pop art, and depict American culture and life in an ironic manner, often containing political criticisms of American society.
