This sculptural group, integrated by the figures of the Virgin Mary and the archangel San Gabriel, is inscribed in the wide historicist phenomenon of the XIX century, characterized by the conscious recovery of styles of the past. In this case, the work follows Gothic models, reinterpreted from a nineteenth-century sensibility that combines medieval evocation with formal solutions typical of serial or workshop production.
The figures present a marked frontality and a marked hieratism, characteristic features of the Gothic language, visible both in the idealized serenity of the faces and in the contained disposition of the bodies. The folds of the draperies, long and broken, cascade down to the base, creating vertical rhythms that reinforce the sensation of spirituality. The Virgin is represented in an introspective attitude, with her head slightly inclined and her arms folded, a traditional iconography that alludes to her humility and acceptance of the divine plan. The angel Saint Gabriel, identified by his demeanor and gesture of communication, holds the attribute that links him to the episode of the Annunciation, establishing a visual and theological dialogue between the two figures.
The work corresponds to a context marked by the rise of neo-Gothic and Romantic interest in the Middle Ages as a repository of spiritual and artistic values considered authentic.
