DESCRIPTION
"Lions or hippocampi". Italy, XVII century
Pair of walnut wood carvings.
They show some restoration on the legs.
Measurements: 96 x 50 x 25 cm (each one).
Important pair of carved walnut wood sculptures representing sea lions or seahorses of powerful baroque dynamism. The figures, conceived in symmetrical contraposition, show hybrid bodies with torso and head of feline of vehement expression that are transformed into vigorous serpentiform tails coiled on rocky bases.
The composition, of marked verticality and strong torsion, fully responds to the Italian sculptural language of the 17th century, where movement, theatricality and anatomical tension are essential elements. The treatment of the fur and the undulating mane reveals a deep and expressive carving, intended to produce chiaroscuro effects and an intense luminous vibration on the surface.
This type of fantastic creatures, linked to the marine and mythological imaginary, were frequent in Baroque decorative programs, especially in architectural furniture, monumental staircases, gardens or as finishing elements in palace interiors. Their heraldic and symbolic character reinforced the idea of power, vigilance and dominion over natural forces.
Carved in walnut - a noble wood widely used in Italian sculpture for its resistance and quality of grain - they retain a patina in keeping with their age. They show some restorations on the legs, respectfully integrated with the whole.
