Rocío Garriga obtained a PhD in Art and Research from the Universitat Politècnica de València in 2015, recognition that was distinguished with the Extraordinary Doctoral Thesis Award in 2018. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the same university and a degree in Philosophy from the Universitat de València. Her career combines artistic creation with teaching and research in the field of the arts. In addition, she completed her training as a Scenic Designer in 2013, which expanded her field of action towards live arts, collaborating since then with performance, theater, dance and contemporary circus companies.
Her practice is characterized by the use of multiple languages, installation, sculpture, sound, video and photography, which she articulates from a solid conceptual base linked to her philosophical training. In his work he investigates hybrid zones where history, memory and language converge, incorporating resources close to cinema, literature and dramaturgy. His proposals explore alternative forms of narration, placing the expressive and symbolic power of the object at the center.
Throughout her career she has developed several research stays and international residencies. In 2019 she was the recipient of the Grant for Stays in Prestigious Universities and Research Centers (UPV), thanks to which she carried out residencies at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts London) and at the Centre de Recherche Dynamiques Européennes of the Université de Strasbourg. Between 2011 and 2012 she worked in Brighton as a visiting artist and researcher at the Centre for Research & Development at the University of Brighton. She previously collaborated with the Laboratoire Cultures et Sociétés en Europe (Strasbourg) in 2010 and, in 2009, she enjoyed the DKV Grand Tour Scholarship with an artist residency in New York.
His work has been recognized in various competitions, including the First Prize for Sculpture Askatasunarte (2017) and the XVI Contemporary Art Encounters Competition of the University Museum of Alicante (2016). He also represented Spain at the EGC European Glass Context Biennial (Denmark). He has exhibited in various countries such as Canada, Finland, Puerto Rico, Italy and Belgium, and in spaces such as the Centre d'Art Tecla Sala (Barcelona), the Dados Negros Center (Ciudad Real) and the Musée Basque in Bayonne.
She currently combines her artistic production, focused, among other projects, on a research on the bombed zoos from the Second World War until today, with her teaching work as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València, where she lives and has her studio.
